International Beer Day — A Day to Celebrate

For thousands of years, beer has been part of human culture, spreading across both time and geography. But did you know that it was only in this century that it finally got a day on the calendar entirely dedicated to it?

Beer has come a long way since it was first brewed by some of the world’s great ancient civilizations, eventually becoming the centerpiece of one of the largest festivals in the world — Oktoberfest. Today, it is the most widely consumed alcoholic beverage on the planet, and its social importance is undeniable, marking moments of celebration, gastronomy, and simple relaxation.

Better late than never

Considering all this, it’s incredible to think that before 2007, this delicious drink didn’t have a day of its own. One might argue that every day is a good day to celebrate beer, but Jesse Avshalomov thought that wasn’t enough. So, in a bar in Santa Cruz, California, he started a new tradition — the celebration of International Beer Day.

Interestingly, the date of this celebration isn’t always the same. Confused? Here’s why. At first, it was held every year on August 5th, chosen for its warm and inviting summer weather. But after a few editions, in 2012, the founder decided it made more sense to celebrate it on the first Friday of August — a change for which we can all be thankful.

A Drink That Brings People Together

Don’t be mistaken—this day isn’t just another excuse to have a beer. On the contrary, it carries three noble purposes:

To enjoy beer in the company of friends

To celebrate the art of master brewers and everyone involved in serving it

To unite the world in a celebration that includes beers from all countries and cultures

Since its humble and recent beginnings, this day is now celebrated in more than 80 countries—Portugal proudly among them. So, here’s to raising our glasses and wishing you a happy International Beer Day.
